As a child, he suffered from a rare neurological disorder typified by uncontrollable movements, requiring him to miss school frequently. He escaped boredom during these times through comic books and magazines, immersing himself in the worlds of both heroes and Hollywood glamour. From these publications, he made paper cutouts of advertisements and photographs. This childhood hobby likely inspired his distinctive silkscreen technique—the repetitive recreation of emblematic figures and familiar products for a consumer-driven and celebrity-obsessed audience. The themes of repetition, celebrity, and glamour became synonymous with Warhol, not only in his screen prints, but also in his documentation of life. The photograph at the right, Table, encapsulates these themes in a single frame. The composition revolves around the repeated table settings, the reflection of the camera’s flash, and the empty chairs holding the promise of prominent and glamorous event attendees. The screen print of Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland comes from Warhol’s Reigning Queens series, which also included portraits of Queen Elizabeth II of England, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, and Queen Magrethe II of Denmark. Warhol based the images on existing photographs of the queens, but used abstract shapes and large blocks of color to achieve a collaged effect in a screen print medium. He enhanced the effect by adding diamond dust, tiny bits of cut glass designed to catch and reflect light, to the surface layer of ink. This sparkle also lends a sense of opulence to the queens, each of whom ruled in her own right rather than through a male relative. Description An account of the resource In one version of the Ramayana, after his coronation, Rama banishes Sita to the forest in response to rumors that she was unfaithful during her captivity in Lanka. In this painting, Rama performs a fire sacrifice as part of his royal duties. Since tradition holds that the sacrificer’s wife must be present, a golden statue replaces the exiled Sita. The statue highlights the dilemma of a king who must follow the proscribed ritual of sacrifice, but must also banish a potentially unfaithful wife. The confinement of women to the private sphere on the edges of the composition also evokes conceptions of female subservience implied by the golden statue. The hierarchical organization of the male figures and architectural components infuse the central, public space with a sense of order, authority, and righteousness. The compositional lines draw the viewer’s attention consistently back to Rama, designating his position of importance at the center. The other scenes depict Guha’s account. At top left, Guha converses with Lakshmana, who watches over Rama and Sita as they sleep on the forest floor, about the precarious state of Ayodhya. A scene of the court is seen at top right, with Dasharatha surrounded by his three queens. Guha then explains how, taking on ascetic garb, Rama matted his hair with the sap of a banyan tree (center), prior to crossing the Ganges River, ferried by Guha (bottom left). The story ends in the bottom right, where Bharata appears again, collapsing in grief after hearing of Rama’s arduous journey. In reaction to Rama’s untimely exile, the painting illustrates multiple forms fraternal piety: Lakshmana’s steadfast devotion and Bharata’s pious grief. Here king Dasharatha, having joyously resolved on the succession of his eldest son Rama, has sent the charioteer Sumantra to summon him. As is typical of Mewari style, the painting tells a sequential narrative, with individual scenes separated by architectural motifs and blocks of color. It centers on Rama’s brief chariot journey, across a sparse, stylized field, from his private but majestic home (right) to Dasharatha’s palace (left), its lofty height indicated by a short set of stairs. In the assembly, Rama, seated reverently below three brahmin advisors and the enthroned king himself, learns of his imminent coronation. The coronation, however, will soon be interrupted by the plotting of Kaikeyi, one of Dasharatha’s three wives. Invoking two royal boons promised to her years earlier, she demands that the king banish Rama to a life of asceticism in the forest, and consecrate her son, Bharata, in his place. Bound by oath, Dasharatha complies, before dying of grief over this perversion of natural succession. On the way, he meets Hanuman, who becomes his faithful servant. In this scene, Rama, Lakshmana, and Hanuman rest in the forest on a leaf mat in a moment of quiet devotion that contrasts with the scenes of ritual and violence depicted in other paintings in the exhibition. Rama’s bow and arrows lie on the ground in front of the leaf mat. Holding Rama’s foot in his hand, Lakshmana tenderly removes a thorn from Rama’s foot as Hanuman places his arm around Rama’s shoulder. Because this scene does not appear in textual versions of the Ramayana, it is possible that this painting was produced for devotional purposes. Rama, Lakshmana, and Hanuman often function as moral exemplars. Here, Hanuman and Lakshmana are the ideal devotees of Rama, understood to be God incarnate.
