Conservation

A variety of materials were used to create patterns, including spotted animal fur, red & black woolen textiles, kauri shells, and braided leather buttons. Dust and debris were gently removed from these surfaces by indirect vacuuming, using soft brushes and a low-suction HEPA filter vacuum.

The eyes are emphasized with kaolin clay, which can flake off revealing the dark wood below. A dilute adhesive was applied by brush to small areas of loss to secure the kaolin.

A thin painted brass wire was sewn with cotton thread to the underside of one sidelock to support the sagging curl. Stiches were passed between the plaits of the braid with a fine needle.

Creases in the strip-cloth garment were lightly humidified with a cool mist and flattened between blotters and under weights.

Pillow forms were inserted into each sleeve and under the body of the garment to provide subtle shape and support.
