Mami Wata’s pose may be based on a German print of a snake charmer that circulated in West Africa beginning in the early twentieth century.  The snake charmer print fit easily into existing Ibibio conventions, which linked the water spirit Eka Abassi to snakes.

Mami Wata is usually shown with long hair, which relates to both the snake charmer print and to ideals of female beauty.
