St. George’s story is cluttered with legends, but he supposedly lived in the 3rdcentury and became a Roman soldier who protested against the empire’s persecution of Christians. The legend of St. George slaying the dragon gained popularity with the 1483 publication of The Golden Legend in which St. George saved a maiden from being sacrificed to a dragon that was terrorizing the city of Silene.
