This map records decades of damage seen on the painting prior to treatment, including tears, folds, holes, stains, and paint loss. The edges of the textile support and secondary backing fabric are fraying. These edges appear to have been cut or torn, perhaps to remove the painting from a frame. One crease bisects the painting vertically, and three more creases divide the painting horizontally. These creases suggest that the painting was folded in half top to bottm and then folded two more times to make a small square bundle, much like folding a blanket. The painting probably remained folded for a long time. The paint is cracked, and grime has accumulated along the folds.
