Some of the paints were powdering or flaking. The white paint is especially unstable, resulting in the loss of details that were painted on top of white, such as the black pupils of the Cosmic Man’s eyes. The pupils, outlines, and eyebrows are more visible in this B/W reflected infrared image because the remaining black pigment particles absorb the infrared radiation and appear dark.
